Key Features
The Gibson Custom 1961 ES-335 Reissue VOS represents one of the most faithful recreations of an early ES-335 ever produced. Developed through extensive study, scanning and hands-on analysis of original 1961 instruments, this model captures the defining features that made the ES-335 a cornerstone of electric guitar history. Built by the expert luthiers of the Gibson Custom Shop, it delivers an authentic vintage playing experience with the consistency and precision expected from a modern historic reissue.
Constructed using a 3-ply maple, poplar and maple body with a solid maple centre block, the 1961 ES-335 offers the perfect balance between hollowbody warmth and solidbody sustain. Rounded cutaways, dot inlays and a slim-taper neck profile reflect the transition-era specifications of early '60s models. Finished in a Vintage Burst nitrocellulose VOS lacquer, this instrument combines period-correct aesthetics with exceptional resonance, clarity and dynamic response, ideal for blues, jazz, rock and beyond.

The 1961 ES-335 Reissue is built around a 3-ply maple, poplar and maple body paired with a solid maple centre block, recreating the construction that defined the original model’s tonal character. This design delivers the airy resonance of a hollowbody while retaining the focus, sustain and feedback resistance of a solid centre section. The rounded Florentine cutaways used in 1961 provide improved upper-fret access and are shaped to match scanned vintage examples, ensuring visual and dimensional accuracy throughout.
A solid mahogany neck is shaped to a SlimTaper ’60s C profile, precisely scanned from original 1961 instruments for authentic feel and response. The long neck tenon is fitted using hide glue, enhancing resonance and coupling between the neck and body. An Indian rosewood fingerboard with a 12-inch radius and 22 authentic medium-jumbo frets offers a smooth, familiar playing surface that supports expressive bending and clean articulation. Pearloid dot inlays complete the period-correct appearance.
The ES-335 Reissue is equipped with a pair of Custombucker humbuckers wound to vintage specifications and fitted with Alnico 3 magnets. These pickups deliver a clear, open voice with warm lows, articulate mids and smooth high-end response, capturing the nuanced character of early PAF-style designs. Traditional wiring includes CTS 500k audio taper potentiometers and paper-in-oil capacitors, allowing each pickup’s volume and tone controls to interact naturally for expressive, dynamic tonal shaping.
Period-correct hardware includes an ABR-1 bridge, lightweight aluminum stop bar tailpiece and Kluson single-line, double-ring tuners, all finished in nickel for a vintage-correct appearance. The nitrocellulose lacquer VOS finish applies a subtle aged patina that enhances resonance while replicating the look of a carefully preserved original. Supplied with a Gibson Custom Shop hardshell case and Certificate of Authenticity, this instrument delivers a complete historic ownership experience.
